The 2015-16 season was a big year for the Coker wrestling program, as the team became part of the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference and finished second in the conference in its first season of affiliation. Wainwright led the Cobras to a 9-1 record in January en route to a 14-3, 4-2 ECAC regular season. Wainwright's program also made great strides in the postseason, having eight Cobras advance to day two of the NCAA Super Regional tournament and heavyweight senior Austin Akins advancing to the national tournament. Akins went 4-2 at nationals in Sioux Falls, S.D. to take fourth place and cement All-American status, becoming the first All-American in Coker wrestling history.  Five Cobras including Akins were named to All-Academic teams. The Cobras finished with a 3.149 team grade point average, 18th-best among Division II wrestling teams nationally. Wainwright was also named ECAC Coach of the Year, while Austin Akins (first team), Charilie Huff (second team), Derrick Nelson (second team), Jamal Lackey (second team) and Derrick Booth (second team) each earned All-ECAC honors.

During his second season at the helm of the Cobras, Wainwright led the team to a 14-5 record in dual matches, appeared in the Top 5 in the NCAA Super Regional Polls for three weeks and two NCAA National Polls. Senior Travis Laxton became the second Cobra wrestler to advance to the NCAA DII National Championship. During his season Wainwright guided his team to a 3.0 team GPA and his works on and off the mat garnished him the Coker College Coach of the Year award.  Coker wrestling career dual meets record is 24-12 (.667% Winning Percentage).

In his first year leading the Cobras, Wainwright led the team to a record of 10-7 in dual matches and had five wrestlers win at least 15 matches and three win 20 or more. Junior Charlie Huff became the first Cobra wrestler to advance to the NCAA DII National Championship. He was also named Coker's C.G. Timberlake Athlete of the Year.

Wainwright became the first wrestling coach at Coker in November 2012. Wainwright came to Coker after serving as head coach at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas, since May 2011. Prior to that, he served as an assistant wrestling coach at St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, Minn., for two years.

Originally from Green Cove Spring, Fla., Wainwright attended Newberry College, where he was an accomplished wrestler at the Division II level. He won the national championship in his weight class and was runner-up for Division II wrestler of the year in 2009, was a two-time All-American and served as captain of the team for three years.

Wainwright has coached 20 NCAA Division II national qualifiers, 11 All-Americans, two national finalists and one NCAA Division II National Champion.  He has also coached two top 10 NCAA teams and a national runner-up team in 2011.

Wainwright graduated from Newberry with a bachelor’s degree in secondary education in 2009. He received his master’s in sports management from St. Cloud State in 2012. Wainwright is also an Adjunct Professor in the Coker Business Department.
