SALISBURY, NC -- Coker swept a softball doubleheader from host Catawba on Tuesday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Cobras won by the scores of 2-0 and 7-6. It marked the opening games for both teams.

The Cobras got the only run of the opener they would need in the second inning. Marie Mascio (Pelion, S.C.) led off the inning with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Kimberly Atkinson (McBee, S.C.). The other Coker run came in the seventh on Brandi Holder’s (Durham, N.C.) two-out, pinch-hit single.

Somer Bigham (Florence, S.C.) tossed the complete game win for the Cobras. She scattered three hits with five strikeouts over seven innings. The best Lady Indian scoring chance came in the third inning, but with runners on second and third a soft liner by Jacqueline White (Mt. Ulla, N.C.) was turned into an inning-ending double play.

Mascio had two-hits to lead Coker. White, Lindsay Gay (Cleveland, N.C) and Stacey Hancy (Advance, N.C.) had the Catawba hits.

White delivered a run-scoring single to put Catawba ahead 1-0 after an inning of the nightcap, but Coker took the lead on a three-run homer by Christan Moribito (Charlotte, N.C.) in the third. A solo blast by Lacey Waldroop (Franklin, N.C.) cut the deficit to 3-2 in the fourth.

Coker would build a 6-2 edge in the fifth as consecutive run-scoring hits by Mascio and Atkinson was followed by a Nicole Crider (Florence, S.C.) sacrifice fly. The Lady Indians would rally in their fifth to tie score.

Liz Corbett (Severn, Md.) doubled to open the frame and scored on an error, while Amanda Mitchell (Huntington, Md.) doubled home a run. Catawba would load the bases and a bases loaded walk to Shannon Handy (Advance, N.C.) forced home a run. A single by Stacey Handy would tie the score at six, but Bigman struck out the final two batters to avert further damage.

The Cobras would take the lead in the sixth as Amy Shelley (Marion, S.C.) doubled with two outs and scored on a bloop single to center by Jessica Blackwell (Hartsville, S.C.). Moribito paced Coker with three hits, while Bigham earned the win in relief. Stacey Handy and Gay had two hits for Catawba.

Coker will now host Francis Marion this Saturday, February 12, at 2:00 PM.
