Brevard, N.C. – The Coker College men’s soccer team won a thriller on Wednesday afternoon, as they defeated Brevard College in the closing seconds of the overtime period, 3-2.

The loss drops BC to 4-9-2 overall, while Coker improves to 6-11 for the season.

The game was very sloppy as both teams had to contend with the swamp like field surface as rain continued to fall throughout the match.

The Cobras jumped out early in the first half, when Dennis Gonzalez (Orlando, FL) was able to score after dribbling through the Tornado defense, giving Coker a 1-0 lead at the 16:15 mark.

Coker increased their lead to 2-0 at the 63:33 mark of the second half, when Olivier Harper (Orlando, FL) was good on a penalty kick, putting the shot just past BC’s keeper Trevor Redpath.

However, the Tornados would not blow away, as Fernando Sandoval cut Coker’s lead in half at the 71:53 mark. Sandoval received a pass from Kenneth Bryan III, where he then fired a shot from just inside the right top corner of the box and past a diving Adam Danziger (Palmetto, FL) for the goal.

With time quickly winding down on the Tornados, senior Owen Carson would notch the game-tying goal in the 86th minute, which would ultimately force the overtime frame.

With the score tied 2-2 both teams fought hard to try to get the game-winning goal, with Coker’s Jake Wyman (Bradenton, FL) scoring with only 0:03 seconds remaining in the extra period. Coker’s Daniel Shirzad found an open Wyman at the top right corner of the box, where he legged out a laser shot past a diving Redpath for the game-winning score. Wyman’s goal marked not only the game winner, but his first of the season.

For the match senior goalkeeper Trevor Redpath had six saves, as he faced 17 shots for the match, while Danziger had eight saves, as he faced 20 shots.

The Cobras will wrap up their 2007 season at home this Saturday, October 27, when they will host Pfeiffer University at 4 p.m. There will be a special half-time ceremony to honor seniors Jake Wyman and Olivier Harper.
