Hartsville, S.C. – Four Cobras scored in double figures, as Coker knocked off Morris College in their season opener on Monday night by a score of 78-69. Mason Ambler (Atlanta, Ga.), Delonte Doles (Roswell, Ga.), Vatrick Thompson (Columbia, S.C.) and Joselle Bracy (Ruby, S.C.) led the Cobras to the win in the back and forth, high energy game in front of a packed house at the Timberlake-Lawton Gymnasium.
There were 13 lead changes in the game with neither team handling the ball exceptionally well as there were 35 total turnovers. Morris outshot the Coker 46.4 percent from the floor compared to just 40.7 percent, but the Cobras shot 67.5 percent from the free throw line, while the Hornets shot just 61.1 percent.
Ambler recorded his first double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore Doles notched 19 points as well in his first collegiate start while grabbing five rebounds. Thompson netted 16 points on the night, with Bracy scoring 12 points for the Cobras.
Morris’ Reshrond Tucker had a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds, with Hartsville native Randall James scoring 16 points and grabbing four rebounds. Ricky Drummond was the third Hornet in double figures, scoring 11 points.
The Cobras return to the floor on Friday, Nov. 20, when they travel to UNC-Pembroke for the UNC-Pembroke Classic. Coker will play cross-town rival Francis Marion in their first game of the classic. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
