NEWBERRY, S.C. – Nick Fuoco’s (Palm Bay, Fla.) RBI single in the top of the ninth gave the Cobra baseball team a 7-6 lead and the eventual win over the Newberry College Wolves in non-conference game on Tuesday night. Matt Bowman (Streator, Ill.)(1) pitched a scoreless ninth to earned the save as he shut down the Wolves with a pair of strike outs and a fly out.
Russ White (Marion, S.C.) (2-0) picked up his second victory of the season tossing two innings of relief allowing three runs on two hits with a strikeout.
Newberry (12-13) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single by Jovan Rohena and a sacrifice fly by Robby Scaggs. The inning was started with back-to-back bunt singles by Kevin Rufus and John Fogarile.
The Wolves held on to the lead until the fifth inning when the Cobras (10-16) put up six runs in the fifth. An RBI double by Fico Kondla (Miami, Fla.) gave Coker its first run and Rob Quattrock (Holtsville, N.Y.) scored on a wild pitch to tie the game. Matt Ammons' (Chester, S.C.) RBI single gave the visitors the lead and RBI singles from Fuoco and Tyler Witzel (Melbourne, Fla.) and a run on a first-and-third play to end the inning gave Coker a 6-2 lead.
Newberry loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth when Fogarile was plated on a double play ball and the Wolves tied the game at 6-all in the bottom of the eighth with three runs on an RBI single by Keke Wadsworth, when Derek Bley reached on an error and an RBI single by Andy Vogel.
However, the Cobras were able to convert a ninth inning error into the game-winning run on Fuoco's two-out single to give the visitors the win.
Newberry’s Matt Mege (2-3) was tagged with the loss going 3.2 innings in relief allowing two runs on five hits with four strikeouts.
Fuoco finished the game with a pair of hits and a pair of RBIs, while Kondla and Daniel Hiatt (Elwood, Ind.) each had two this with a double. Kondla also drove in a run for the Cobras.
Coker will be back in action this weekend when they hit the road to take on Barton College in a three-game Conference Carolinas series starting with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon.
