HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker Cobras posted 26 runs on 17 hits in a 26-4 romp over Claflin University on Thursday afternoon in Division II collegiate baseball. The win improves the Cobras to 5-1 on the year, while Claflin falls to 1-1.
The Cobras used six pitchers to get the win with senior Michael Rogers (Florence, S.C.) (1-0) earned the official win, tossing three innings of scoreless baseball, while allowing just two hits with a strikeout. Claflin’s Darryl White (0-1) took the unfortunate loss, as he allowed eight runs on six hits over 3.1 innings with three strikeouts and eight walks.
Senior catcher Jessie Crockett (North East, Md.) had a stellar day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two home runs, six RBIs and two runs scored, while freshman Drew Hardee (Rock Hill, S.C.) also had three hits and a pair of RBIs with a run scored. Brinley Griffin (Port St. John, Fla.) drove in three runs on an inside the park home run and scored two runs, with Adam Windham (Lamar, S.C.) and Gavin Bailey (Florence, S.C.) each had two hits, with Windham hitting a double and driving in two runs and Bailey had a three run triple for his first collegiate hit.
Coker will now prepare to play their first Conference Carolinas series of the season this weekend. The Cobras travel to Mount Olive, N.C. to take on the Trojans of Mount Olive College. The two teams will meet in a double-header starting Saturday, Feb. 13 at noon, and they will cap off the weekend with a game at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
