Hartsville, SC- It might have taken five games, but the Coker Cobras Baseball Team had their first win of the season as they defeated Benedict College 15-7. The Cobras are now 1-4 overall, while Benedict falls to 2-3.


Benedict got the scoring started early, as they jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but Coker wasn’t far behind. The Cobras jumped out to 10-2 lead after the first, as they scored 10 runs on eight hits and a Tiger error.


The score remained 10-2 until the sixth inning when Benedict plated another two runs. The Cobras answered again this time scoring three runs of their own at the bottom half of the inning. The Tigers added another three runs in the top of the seventh, before Coker added two in the bottom of the seventh, leading to the final score.


Senior Seth Weinberg (1-0) earned the win, throwing three innings, allowing just two runs on four hits with four strikeouts.


Dawan Browning took the loss for Benedict, throwing just a third of an inning, allowing seven runs on six hits.


Offensively for the Cobras, Brian Nally led the way going 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and three runs scored. Ben Davidson was also 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Alex Arango and Steven Evans were each 2-for-4, with Arango collecting three RBIs and Evans hitting a triple and driving in a run. Also collecting multiple hits for Coker were Trey Lynch (2-for-3), Brian Johanson (2-for-5) and Eric Losten (2-for-3).


For the Tigers, Deshaun Brooks was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Browning was 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Alexander Harvey finished the game 3-for-4, while Michael Cornish was 2-for-4 and Jazper Hawkins was 2-for-5.


Coker returns to the field on Friday, when they travel across town for the Francis Marion Baseball Challenge. Game one for the Cobras is versus Lenoir- Rhyne at 3:00 p.m.
