Hickory, N.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne College Baseball Team shut out Coker College, 10-0, Sunday afternoon at Bears Field to complete a three-game weekend sweep of the Cobras.  L-R, with its first shutout of the year, improved to 6-3 on the year while Coker fell to 2-5.

Four players had a pair of hits and drove in two runs for the Bears and freshman Jesse Beane (Collettsville, N.C./West Caldwell) threw six scoreless innings en route to this first collegiate win.  Beane (1-1) scattered six hits while striking out three to improve his mark on the year to 1-1.  Larry Morris (Earleville, Md.) took the loss for Coker.

 

Senior designated hitter John Verdinek (High Point, N.C./Appalachian State University) opened the scoring with a two-run double in the third inning for the Bears. 

 

Lenoir-Rhyne then broke the contest open with five runs in the bottom of the fifth highlighted by two-run hits from junior center fielder Matt Wiley (Charlotte, N.C./West Charlotte HS) and senior third baseman Ronnie Davis (Barnwell, S.C./S.C.-Aiken).

 

The Bears plated three more in the sixth inning to push the lead to 10-0.

Senior catcher Matt Keever (Hickory, N.C./High Point University) had a game-high three hits and four pitchers combined on the shutout.
