L-R Overwhelms Coker With Doubleheader Sweep, 18-4 And 12-5


Hickory, N.C. – The Lenoir-Rhyne College Baseball Team (5-3) opened the 2005 home portion of its schedule with a doubleheader sweep of Coker (2-4), 18-5 and 10-4, Saturday afternoon at Bears Field.


Game One - Lenoir-Rhyne 18, Coker 4

The Bears took control early with 10 runs in the first three innings and cruised to an easy win.  Junior centerfielder Matt Wiley (Charlotte, N.C./West Charlotte HS) highlighted a four-run first for the Bears with a two-run single and Lenoir-Rhyne put things away with five runs in the third and fourth innings capped off by senior designated hitter John Verdinek's (High Point, N.C./Appalachian State University) three-run home run in the fourth.


Wiley finished the contest with a game-high five runs batted in while sophomore shortstop Taylor MacCurdy (Charlotte, N.C./Providence HS) and Verdinek added four hits apiece.


Sophomore Dennis Downey (Waynesville, N.C./Tuscola HS) limited the Cobras to two runs in six innings pitched and improved to 2-0 on the year.  Stephen Dill (Florence, S.C.) suffered the loss for Coker.
