HARTSVILLE, SC—Coker pulled out an 8-7 victory over Chowan College Sunday Afternoon with a comeback victory in their final at-bat.  The Cobras improve to 2-1 on the year while Chowan drops to 0-1.

Coker took control early behind a good start from junior Craig Zumwinkel/Ellisville, MO and led 5-0 after four innings.  Zumwinkel held the Braves hitless until the fifth, when control problems opened the door for a Chowan rally.  The Braves tied the score with a five run inning despite only amassing one hit.

The Cobras retook a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the inning but Chowan came back in the seventh with two runs, again scored with only one hit.  A costly error at third base allowed the first run to score and put runners on second and third with no outs.  CC eased the pressure by turning a double play against the next batter but the go-ahead run crossed the plate.

With two outs in the eighth Coker rallied to tie the score.  Dustin Dockter/Columbia, SC singled and moved to second on a walk to Brian Nally/Highland Heights, OH.  Senior Conrad Deese/Pageland, SC then stepped to the plate and roped a hit to center field to tie the game at 7-7.

Nic Fletcher/Littleton, CO started off the ninth by reaching on an error by the shortstop.  Freshman Carlton Deese/Pageland, SC moved him to second with a bunt and Fletcher moved to third on a sacrifice fly to center field.  With a 2-2 count against junior Eric Losten/Chesapeake City, MD, Chowan pitcher Mike Mianulli’s pitch got by backstop Patrick Swift and Fletcher raced home to score the winning run.

The Cobras out-hit the visitors 15-3 but six walks, two hit batsmen and two errors allowed the Braves to stay close and even lead in the bottom of the ninth.  Zumwinkel gave up only one hit and struck out three in four innings, but walks in the fourth inning chased him from the game.  Junior Stephen Dill/Florence, SC pitched well in relief to earn his first win of the year, going three innings with only one hit and one walk allowed.

Coker travels to Newberry College on Wednesday, January 9, for a 2:30 PM start against the Indians.
