HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The opening game of the first round of the NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer Southeast Regional Tournament was a thrilling double overtime game that saw the #2 seed Flagler College come out on top with a 2-1 win over the #6 seed Lees-McRae College.
Marco Padilla gave the Saints the win with a one timer just 19 seconds into the second overtime period. Will Frandsen had the assist on the goal.
A very evenly matched game, Flagler took the lead with an unassisted goal from Branden Langenberg at the end of the first half. Lees-McRae scored the equalizer 10 minutes into the second half on an unassisted goal of their own from James Smith.
The score remained even at one through the remainder of regulation time and through the first overtime until Padilla’s game-winner in the opening seconds of the second overtime.
Flagler held the advantage in shots 16-10, with the Bobcats Thomas Rusling picking up seven saves.
The Saints improve to 16-3-2 on the year and advance to play the winner of the #1 seed Coker and the #4 seed Mars Hill on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in the Second Round of the Southeast Region Tournament.
Lees-McRae’s season comes to an end with a record of 16-6-1.
