Previous to Coker: Esona had a successful high school soccer career at Reagan High School. He played for the Men's Soccer team, representing the Raiders. In recognition of his outstanding performance, he was named to the 2021 4A All-Conference team, which highlights the top players in the conference. Additionally, Esona was selected for the All-District team, further showcasing his skills and talent on the field. Not only was Esona a standout athlete, but he also excelled academically. He earned a place on the Honor Roll, demonstrating his commitment to both his studies and his sport. In addition to his high school soccer career, Esona also played travel soccer for NC Fusion. This allowed him to further develop his skills and compete at a higher level outside of his high school team.
Personal: He is the son of Andile and Nonkosi Bongweni. Esona also has one sibling, Nasi Bongweni, who attends UNC Chapel Hill.
