Cobra Spotlight- Emma Ferguson & Batavia Mata, Women's Soccer
The "Cobra Spotlight" is a weekly highlight of a student-athlete at Coker College. Each week we take a different athlete from a different sport and display some facets to get more familiar with them. This week we take a look at Emma Ferguson and Batavia Mata, members of the women's soccer team.

Name: Batavia Mata
Sport: Women’s Soccer
Position: Wherever coach puts me, lately its forward.
Hometown: San Marcos, California, which is part of San Diego County
Year: Sophomore
Major: Double major in political science and communication
Why did you choose Coker? Personally, I wanted to get out of California and explore the East Coast and through the game of soccer, I was granted that wish.
What is your best memory at Coker (athletic related)? I think it’s a tie between scoring my first college goal and beating Catawba in overtime this season.
What is your best memory at Coker (non-athletic related)? Well bandfest and homecoming would be up there but defiantly my best memory at Coker would be my birthday freshman year. My best friend flew in from California and that same night I created a friendship with my roommates now, Meg, Trish and Angela where we bonded over cheerios, lemonade, junk food and Disney movies.
Which athletic team would you play on at Coker other than your own? Well I think I would save teams from myself by not joining one because I have no hand eye coordination and I am super clumsy. But volleyball would be cool to try cause I am somewhat tall, even though I probably make a laugh out of myself.
Favorite class: Any Communication class
Favorite professor: All of them! For different reasons than the next.
Plans after graduation: I want to work in a branch of government or in an embassy.
Favorite movie: Way to many but I would have to go with any movie with THOR.
Favorite type of music: Alternative
Favorite food: Any Mexican Burrito.... like a California burrito or breakfast or... I think I have to stop cause it makes me miss home a little too much.
Favorite sports team: Football… I am a Saints fan at heart but a Chargers fan by blood. Hockey would be the Chicago Blackhawks. Soccer would be Real Madrid just because my boyfriend is in love with Barcelona. College basketball would be Gonzaga.
Favorite color: Sky Blue
Favorite TV show: Its currently a tie Gotham and How to Get a Way With Murder.
Most prized possession: My siblings, but they really aren't something you can actually possess.. so I would say my vintage Thor comics.
What is something people may not know about you? I can have an entire conversation based on Disney lines.
Do you have a nickname? If so, how did you get it? Tavi is the most common because when I was little no one could ever say my name right and it’s a mouth full to yell on the soccer field.
One word that describes you: adventurous
