HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The 2012-13 Coker College women's basketball schedule was released this week, and it includes a pair of Division I opponents, the South Atlantic Conference-Conference Carolinas Challenge and a New Year's Eve tournament.
For the second year in a row, Coker will open the season by taking on a school from the Southeastern Conference. Last season the Cobras began with an exhibition game against the University of Kentucky, and in 2012-13 they will open up with an exhibition against the University of Tennessee.
"We are extremely honored and excited to be playing the University of Tennessee this season," said Coker head coach Jenny Finora. "It is going to be an awesome experience for our players, and I believe it will be an excellent way for us to prepare for the regular season."
The Cobras will take on the Lady Volunteers at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4 at Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville, Tenn. Tennessee finished the 2011-12 season with a record of 27-9, making an NCAA-record 25th appearance in the Elite Eight.
In addition to the exhibition game against Tennessee, the Cobras will also take on Division I opponent Charleston Southern University at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1 in Charleston.
Also highlighting the 2012-13 schedule is the South Atlantic Conference-Conference Carolinas Challenge Nov. 9-10 at Lincoln Memorial University and a New Year's Eve Tournament Dec. 30-31 at Georgia College.
In all, the Cobras will play six non-conference opponents, including local rival Francis Marion University on Dec. 3, and 22 Conference Carolinas games.
Last season, Coker finished with a record of 11-16 overall, winning 11 of its final 15 games. The Cobras have a solid core of players returning to lead the team, including all-conference seniors Amber Lau and Jessica Cohen.
"This team is ready to go," said Finora. "We started slow last season but got on a hot streak to finish out the year. Hopefully, we will carry that over into this season."
Coker will begin its quest for a Conference Carolinas title on Saturday, Nov. 17 at Limestone College.
This will be the Cobras' final season in Conference Carolinas, as Coker moves to the South Atlantic Conference starting in the 2013-14 season.
