SUMTER, S.C. – On Friday (Sept. 27), the Coker men's tennis team completed the opening day of the ITA Fall Regional.
Leading the way for the Cobras was sophomore Andre Staab. The No. 2 seed in the men's singles flight, Staab won both his matches to advance to the round of 16 on Saturday. He won his first set over Jack West of Erskine, 6-1, 6-1, and then defeated Loic Minery of Pfeiffer, 6-3, 6-1. In his first match on Saturday he will face Andy Quirk of USC Aiken.
In addition to Staab's solid play, senior James Corifeld won his first match of the day, defeating Guil Frias of Young Harris, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. He then battled Antoine LeDore of Limestone in the round of 32, but lost a tough three set match, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Sophomore William Marrafao also advanced to the round of 32 defeating Gabriel Martins of Lincoln Memorial, 6-3, 6-1. Marrafao eventually fell to the No. 1 seed Vncent Verpeaux from Lander, 6-1, 6-3. Sophomore Tom Sizeland was forced to retire from his opening round match with King's Leonardo Brigato due to injury.
In doubles action, Sizeland and Zach Grooms lost their opening round match to Fernando Espana and Ross Sons of Newberry, 8-3, while the duo of Staab and Corfield lost a heartbreaker, 9-8, to Guil Frias and Martin Harach of Young Harris.
The pairing of Marrafao and Martin Moncayo were the lone victors for the Cobras in doubles action, they defeated Alejandro Andino and Ronan Reberac of USC Aiken 9-7, advancing to the round of 16 for doubles.
The Cobras will be back on the courts at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, S.C. starting at 8 a.m. Saturday morning with doubles play. Singles action will begin at 1 p.m.
