Coker Men's Golf Selected Third by Conference Coaches

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker College men's golf team has been picked third in the Conference Carolinas preseason coaches' poll, the league office announced today.

The Cobras won the Conference Carolinas championship in 2012. They erased an 18-shot deficit on the final day to win the tournament. Earning a berth to the NCAA tournament, Coker finished 18th in the South/Southeast Regional as a team.

During the fall season, Coker finished in the top five in all four of its events. The team earned two national rankings for its efforts, sitting at No. 8 in the Golfstat poll and No. 14 in the Golf World/Nike Golf Coaches' Poll at the end of the fall.

Senior Jake Murphy, a first team all-conference player in 2012, returns to lead the squad. Also returning are juniors Josh Clay and Matt Kreider, and sophomores Christopher Fuga, Luke Coates and Aaron Beebe.

The 2013 men's golf season begins Feb. 11 at the Spring Kickoff Intercollegiate in Orange Park, Fla.

Barton College was voted first with 69 points and four first-place votes. Belmont Abbey College was second with 67 points and two first-place votes. Coker came in third with 63 points and three first-place votes.

The entire preseason poll is as follows: 1. Barton College; 2. Belmont Abbey College; 3. Coker College; 4. King College; 5. Mount Olive College; 6. Queens University of Charlotte; 7. Erskine College; 8. Pfeiffer University; 9. Limestone College; 10. North Greenville University.

Conference Carolinas is a NCAA Division II athletic conference made up of 12 teams from North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. These institutions are Barton College, Belmont Abbey College, Coker College, Converse College, Erskine College, King College, Lees-McRae College, Limestone College, Mount Olive College, North Greenville University, Pfeiffer University and Queens University of Charlotte.
