HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The 2013-14 Coker College men's basketball schedule was released this week, and it features some new opponents the Cobras have not seen much of over the years as they begin play in the South Atlantic Conference.
After spending 22 years playing Conference Carolinas foes, head coach Dan Schmotzer and the Cobras will take the court 22 times against teams from the SAC.
"We are thrilled to be making the move to the SAC this year," said Schmotzer. "It is going to be a fun and challenging adventure for us. The SAC has some extremely strong competition, but we embrace this challenge and are looking forward to the season."
Included in those SAC contests will be four games against Wingate University and Lincoln Memorial University. Both teams advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Tournament last season.
The Cobras will begin the season on the road Nov. 15-16 at the UNC Pembroke Holiday Classic. They will then travel to Newberry College for their conference opener on Nov. 20. Coker will play its home opener at 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23 against Carson-Newman College.
Last season, the Cobras were 13-14 overall and 10-10 in Conference Carolinas. Second team all-conference selection Julian Nelson returns to lead the squad. The senior from Irmo, S.C., led the team with 17.2 points per game. He also averaged four rebounds and just over two assists per game.
"We have a great group of players coming back that are working hard and are ready to take on the SAC competition," added Schmotzer. "They are hungry to get back to action and so am I."
In addition to the 22 conference contests, the Cobras will play four non-conference games, two at the UNC Pembroke Holiday Classic, along with a game against Benedict College (Dec. 3) and one against UNC Pembroke (Dec. 22).
Fans will be able to watch all Coker home games, live online through the America One Network and by visiting www.cokercobras.com.
