HARTSVILLE, S.C.-- The Coker Cobras took on the Claflin Panthers Tuesday afternoon at Tom J. New Field in a non-conference game. The Cobras defeated the Panthers 14-10. Coker improves to 3-4 on the season and Claflin still searches for their first win, falling to 0-5.
Claflin was led by junior outfielder Julius McDougal (Rochester Hill, MI) who went 2-for-5, with three runs batted in and a run scored. Starting sophomore pitcher Breylon Emory (North Augusta, SC) was charged with the loss, as he scattered six runs (five earned), five hits, four walks, and six strikeouts over four innings. Senior catcher Fedor Herrera (Caracas, VNZ) had 2 runs batted in and also threw out two base stealers.
Coker was led offensively by senior first baseman Nick Fuoco (Palm Bay, FL) who went 3-for-5 with five runs batted in. Fuoco also scored a run. Senior second baseman Matt Ammons (Chester, SC) also had a big contribution going 3-for-3 with three runs scored and a run batted in. Ammons also stole two bases.
Sophomore Dan Meyer (Seaford, NY) started for the Cobras and only went three innings, surrendering five runs, striking out three, and only allowing four hits.
Sophomore Russ White (Marion, SC) got his first win of the season pitching one plus innings, giving up four runs on one hit. White also walked two.
Senior Jonathan Gainey (Hartsville, SC) pitched three solid innings, allowing one run (unearned) on three hits. Gainey also struck out two. Freshman Andrew Goot (Oldsmar, FL) and junior Matt Bowman (Streator, IL) both pitched a shutout inning in relief.
Coker’s next home game is Saturday, February 19 against Bluefield College. It is a scheduled double-header, the first game at noon and the second slated to start at 3 p.m.
