MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The Coker baseball team dropped their third straight game to the Mount Olive Trojans on Monday afternoon 18-8, giving the Trojans the three game sweep over the Cobras to open their 2010 Conference Carolinas play. The loss drops the Cobras to 5-4 overall and 0-3 in the conference, while Mount Olive stays unbeaten and moves to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the conference.
Coker starter Tyler Witzel (West Melbourne, Fla.) (2-1) had a rough outing for the Cobras on the mound, suffering his first loss of the season and his college career. Witzel was roughed up for nine runs on five hits in just one inning of work.
The Trojans Curtis Hudson (1-0) earned the win going five strong innings, allowing just four runs on five hits with three strikeouts.
TJ Cochran (Warrenville, S.C.) was the leading hitter for the Cobras going 3-for-4 with four RBIs, with Trey Lynch (Florence, S.C.) going 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Matt Ammons (Chester, S.C.) finished the day with a home run two RBIs and a run scored and Daniel Hiatt had two RBIs and two runs scored. Matthew Kearnes (Bay Shore, N.Y.) had two hits and a run scored for the Coker.
Coker returns to the diamond on Tuesday, for a non-conference game against St. Augustine’s College. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at Tom J. New Field.
