The Cobras got on the board first, scoring a run in the second on a sacrifice fly by Brian Johanson that brought home Ben Davidson. Coker added another run in the third, when Eric Losten doubled down the left field line to score Ty Medlin, giving the Cobras a 2-0 lead.
The Panthers answered with a run of their own in the top of the fourth, when Ryan Steen led off the inning with a triple and was then brought home with a sacrifice fly from Patrick McDonald.
Coker held a 2-1 lead until the top of the eighth, when Claflin’s Trivon Howard singled home Rafael Outler, tying the game.
It did not take Coker long to get back on top, back-to-back singles by Steven Evans and Anthony Chester in the bottom of the eighth put runners in scoring position for Johanson, who laced an RBI single through the left side, giving Coker the lead 3-2.
Mikael Owens came on to close out the ninth and with a quick ground out and a pair of strike outs, Owens (1) had his first save and Jesse Hatchell (1-0) had the win. Hatchell went three strong innings, allowing one run on four hits with a strikeout.
Jeffery Pierce took the loss for Claflin, throwing seven and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs on 10 hits, while striking out four.
Leading the Cobras at the plate were Johanson, Davidson and Ryan Schaeffer. Each was 2-for-3 on the day, while Johanson had two RBIs and Davidson had a double.
For the Panthers, Ryan Steen was 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored.
Coker returns to the field this weekend as they travel to
