Florence, SC- In their first game of the Gerald Griffin Baseball Classic the Coker College Baseball Team was blown away by the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears 19-2. The loss drops Coker to 1-5 on the season, while Lenoir-Rhyne improves to 4-2.


The Cobras fell behind early, as the Bears took a 5-0 lead in the first inning and then proceeded to pile on the runs as the game progressed. Lenoir-Rhyne added three runs in the fourth, three in the sixth, two in the seventh, a run in the eighth and five more in the ninth.


Coker plated both their runs in the sixth on a two RBI double from Steven Evans.


Jayson Clarke (0-2) took the loss, allowing eight runs on nine hits with three strikeouts in five innings of work. The Cobras other hurlers on the day were Chris Thomas, Jeremy Thompson and Michael Rogers.


The Cobras leading hitter was Ryan Schaeffer 2-for-4, while Evans was 1-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.


Coker returns to the diamond for their second game of the classic Saturday, as they take on number two ranked Georgia College and State University at 12:00 p.m. at Francis Marion.
