SPARTANBURG, SC– Eric Davis smacked a single to right to score Bret Hansen in the ninth to give 21st ranked USC Upstate a 5-4 victory over Coker in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon at Harley Park.
The win snaps the Spartans four-game losing streak and puts their overall record at 32-19 on the year. Coker falls to 26-20. The Spartans play this weekend at Augusta State for their final conference series of the season. First pitch on Friday is set for 7:05 p.m.
The Spartans picked up a run in the third to take the 1-0 lead when Brian Discordia scored on a sacrifice fly by Hansen.
In the fourth, USC Upstate added another run when Kyle Bowley scored on a fielder’s choice giving the Spartans the 2-0 lead.
Coker, however, would tie the game at 2-2 in the seventh when Seth Weinberg launched a two-run homerun to left off USC Upstate starter George Gibson.
The Spartans countered in the seventh putting two runs up in the frame. Will Dozier doubled to left and moved to third on a single by Matt Goyea. Davis would then provide a two-run single to center to put USC Upstate ahead 4-2.
The Spartans could not hold the lead in the ninth, however, as Coker would score twice to tie the game up. Pinch hitter Brantley Bell walked and went to third on a fielding error. After a Brian Nally walk which loaded the bases with one out, T. J. Dawson would single to right off reliever Garrett Holmes to plate both Bell and Conrad Deese.
In the USC Upstate ninth, Hansen would walk and advance to second on a single by Goyea. Coker catcher Justin Sims’ attempt to pick off Hansen at second sailed into the outfield and moved both runners into scoring position. Davis then came up and calmly hit the first pitch off Coker reliever Blake Miller to right, scoring Hansen and giving the Spartans the victory.
Davis led USC Upstate in batting with a 3-for-5 performance and three runs batted in. Weingberg led Coker at the plate with a 2-for-4 day with two runs driven in.
Holmes (3-2) received the victory for the Spartans while Miller (4-1) took the loss for Coker.
