HARTSVILLE, SC – The Coker College Baseball Team (4-5) walloped Claflin University 15-4 Wednesday afternoon in a seven-inning game.  The Cobras scored eight runs in the first two innings to break the game open early.

Coker exploded in the first inning with a three-run homer by Justin Sims which gave CC a 4-0 lead.  The Cobras made 8-0 in the second with the help of a two-RBI double by senior Ben Kershner and another RBI double by T.J. Dawson/Conway, SC.

A throwing error by the catcher allowed Coker to score two more runs in the third inning but Claflin broke through in the fourth and fifth innings with a pair of runs each.  The Cobras erased any doubt with another four-run outburst in the fifth and added an extra in the sixth for good measure.

Eric Losten went 2-2 with three stolen bases and four runs scored for Coker and Sims went 2-3 with four RBI, three runs scored and a homerun.  Kershner smashed two doubles, scored a run and drove in four while sophomore Brian Nally went 3-3 with two RBI.

Junior Seth Weinberg started and pitched four innings with one earned run allowed before giving way to freshman Brad Boob.  Boob pitched two innings with no earned runs allowed and junior Blake Miller pitched the seventh with no hits allowed and one strikeout.

For Claflin, designated hitter Travis Clark collected two hits and drove in two and Johnathan Ritter had a double, drove in a run and scored once.

Coker now prepares for its first CVAC series of the year against Limestone this weekend.  The first game of Saturday’s double-header will begin at 12:00 PM in Hartsville.
