HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The No. 4 seed Wingate Bulldogs scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat the No. 8 seed Coker Cobras 2-1 on Friday (Apr. 24) in the 2015 South Atlantic Conference Softball Championship.
It was a pitcher’s dual through eight innings of softball, as neither team was able to get on the board. Then in the top of the ninth the Cobras jumped out to a 1-0 lead thanks to an RBI double by Carley Bailey that scored Riley Morris. Wingate answered with an RBI single by Taylor Laskey that scored Mellena Helms and tied the game at one. Three batters later Emily Usiak drove home Hailee Barbarits to give the Bulldogs the 2-1 victory.
Stacy Houser (19-14) went the distance for the Bulldogs. She threw nine innings, allowing one run on nine hits with a strikeout.
Tabitha Allen (15-18) took the loss for Coker. She went eight and a third innings, allowing two runs on seven hits with a strikeout.
Usiak finished the game 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Laskey also drove in a run to lead the Bulldogs at the plate.
For Coker, Katelyn Szupello went 2-for-4 with a double and Bailey finished the game 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
Wingate advances to face the No. 7 seed Lincoln Memorial in an elimination game on Friday at 3 p.m. Coker’s season comes to an end with the loss. They finished the year with a record of 24-27.
